Apple has some problems with Stage Manager, the key function of iPadOS 16

The company has decided to delay the launch of iPadOS 16, its operating system for its tablets, according to Bloomberg.

It’s rare enough to be reported: according to Mark Gurman, of Bloomberg, Apple is having some problems with iPadOS 16, the new major version of its operating system for tablets. According to its sources -anonymous, of course- the company would have decided to delay its launch for a month in order to refine it. Usually, iOS and iPadOS are launched in the same movement, during the month of September, when the new iPhones are marketed.

But this year, only iOS would be entitled to this launch at the start of the school year. iPadOS 16 would not be pushed until October. According to Gurman, this postponement is due in particular to the new flagship function of the operating system, Stage Manager, which aims to finally offer a practical interface for multitasking on Apple tablets. The company’s engineers would need more time to fine-tune its operation.

Towards a launch with the new iPads?

Craig Federighi, head of software at Apple, had also warned in June that Stage Manager would undergo changes and improvements before its deployment on compatible tablets. He needs it: as we noticed during our first test on the beta of iPad OS 16, Stage Manager is not free from bugs and ergonomic problems.

At the same time, the iPadOS lag will, again according to Bloomberg, allow Apple to move faster on iOS 16, which is crucial to launch with the new iPhone salvo. iPadOS 16, meanwhile, would roll out closer to another date keynote : the one that should reveal an iPad Pro with the new M2 chip and a new entry-level tablet.

The next version of macOS (Ventura) which will also integrate the Stage Manager function, however, is not delayed: it should be launched in October, as usual. As a reminder, you can already install and try macOS Ventura, iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, via Apple’s public beta program. But watch out for bugs!
